Each student has an individualized educational plan (IEP). Individual needs are identified through the administration of the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) and Achievement Tests (WIAT). The Reading section of the WAIT measures three components: Word Reading, Reading Comprehension, and Pseudoword Decoding which are then translated into Grade Level Equivalents. These tests give objective measures by which literacy abilities can be tracked, and measured for increasing grade level effectiveness.

Each student enrolled receives a minimum of 8 instructional hours a week. During this time, each student is required to read independently or with an adult for 20 minutes daily. Students also receive 15 minutes of daily phonics reinforcement and instruction. Intergenerational activities take place daily with one to one tutors doing homework assistance and with teachers and adult volunteers from the community reading a moral lesson or Bible reading at the beginning of each session. Along with these intergenerational reading activities, parents are required to check over homework assignments and initial that they are keeping up with the children’s progress.

Computer software used in the computer room builds reading skills across the board with age-appropriate activities. Children are in the computer room on Tuesday and Wednesday for a total of about 1 hour a week of enrichment time.
